WV Area Sports Calendar

Registrations slated for South Harrison, Bridgeport cross country teams South Harrison athletes interested in participating in cross country need to contact the school at 745-3315 to sign-up and obtain dates for physical examinations. Practice will begin Aug. 15. Further information is available from the school or Coach Wilt at 269-5987.

___Any Bridgeport High School student interested in running on the cross country team needs to contact coach Valerie Richards at 745-3958.

___The Rosemont Fieldowners Association will again sponsor fall baseball for 9-, 10- and 11- year-old players (as of Aug. 1, 1997). Games will be played in September and October on area fields. All interested parents as well as coaches with prospective teams please call Rick Lilly at 622-9661 or 624-6618.

___The Rosemont Fieldowners Association and the Babe Ruth Leagues of Harrison and Taylor counties will be sponsoring a fall baseball league for 12- and 13-year-old players (age as of Aug. 1, 1997). Games will be played in September and October.

Interested parents and coaches please call 624-6601 or obtain registration forms at Dave Reed's Hobby Shop on Main Street in Bridgeport.

Announcements

All parents and friends of Robert C. Byrd High School may attend a meeting of the RCBHS Boosters Club on Monday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the community building of Christ Episcopal Church at 6th and Main streets in Clarksburg. Parents of freshman students who may not have been members previously are especially encouraged to attend. Membership is open to all parents of RCB students, faculty, staff, administration and friends of RCB.

___The first day of girls soccer practice on Aug. 4 at Bridgeport High School will be held from 7- 9 a.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the soccer field behind the high school parking lot. All candidates need to bring their medical form, proper equipment and water.

___The Bridgeport High School Sports Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at the school. All interested persons should attend.

Officiating

Anyone interested in officiating high school soccer can contact Joel Baird at 884-7721, Ron Ash at 622-4415, Kwame Boateng at 472-8434, Lance Wagner at 449-1555 or Bob Maxon at 292- 2313. Classes start Aug. 1.

___Anyone interested in becoming a registered high school football official should contact Ron "Hawk" Romeo at 592-0447.

___The North Central West Virginia Volleyball Board will hold a training course for officials for the north-central region. Anyone 18 years or older who is interested should contact either Lori Stahara at 291-5579 or Renee Robinson at 363-2650.

Benefit golf

The Salem-Teikyo University Basketball-Eric McGuire Radio Network second annual golf classic will take place on Friday, Aug. 8, at Bel Meadow Country Club.

Entry fee is $55 per person which includes cart and lunch. Registration and a putting contest will be held from noon to 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., play will begin with a shotgun start and awards will be presented immediately after the tournament.

Softball tournaments

NEW MARTINSVILLE _ A 10-team men's double elimination fast pitch softball tournament, sponsored by the Magnolia High School Girls Fast Pitch Boosters Club, will be held Aug. 1-3 at Nathan Hassig Fields in Brooklyn. There is a $100 entry fee, plus two softballs. Further information may be obtained by telephoning Steve Logston at 455-3441 or Bob Snyder at 455-1143.

Running events

MIDDLEBOURNE _ The seventh annual Jug Handle 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for July 29 at 7 p.m. under the sponsorship of the Tyler County Fair Association. There is a $7 pre-registration fee for the race which begins on Rt. 18 North.

___The Hughes River Holiday 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Race will be held on Thursday, July 31, with the Kid's Race beginning at 7 p.m. and the 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 p.m. This year's race will be sponsored by the Ritchie County Middle/High School Track Boosters. All proceeds will benefit the new all weather track at Chuck Schofield Memorial Stadium.

Camps

The Robert C. Byrd Youth Football Camp, featuring coach Richard Iaquinta and his staff, will be held from 8-11:45 a.m. Monday-Wednesday at the school football field.

The camp is for ages 8-13. There is a $30 fee per camper, which includes camp shirt, awards and certificate of participation.

Monday is the deadline for registration. Checks should be made payable to: RCB Football Camp, in care of Pete Bowie, 189 Liberty Ave., Clarksburg, W.Va., 26301.

___The first South Harrison Hawks Football Camp for athletes in grades five through eight will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday at the school athletic complex.

The camp is under the direction of Hawks head coach and former West Virginia University standout Gary Barnette. The staff will include high school coaches and former college players.

Two hours of offensive drills and two hours of defensive drills will be rotated. Other areas to be stressed include conditioning, speed and strength.

There is a $40 fee with checks made payable to South Harrison Athletic Boosters, with proceeds being used to support various projects of the complex. The fee will include a camp T-shirt.

Registration will be accepted through the first day of camp. Further information is available by calling the school at 745- 3315.

___The third annual "Competitive Edge" Girls Basketball Camp will be held at the Robert C. Byrd Gymnasium on Aug. 11-15 from 6-9 p.m.

The camp is for girls only, grades 2-9. The cost of the camp, under the direction of RCB coach Bill Bennett and Bridgeport coach Dave Marshall, is $55.
