Marjorie A. Barker

Marjorie Ann Barker, 59, of 960 Chestnut Ridge, Morgantown, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, following an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 24, 1938, in Burnsville, a daughter of the late Richard Franklin Smith and Hazel Marie Wilson Smith.

Surviving are her former husband, Ralph Barker; one daughter, Mrs. Kim (Jody) Roscher, Morgantown; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Albano, Mission Viejo, Calif., and Mrs. Judy Saltzman, San Diego, Calif., and three grandchildren, Jay Roscher, Nicole Roscher and Brittany Roscher.

Mrs. Barker had previously worked for the Clarksburg Credit Bureau and the former Union National Bank, which is currently Bank One, as a bookkeeper.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Lee Green officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

David W. Radcliff

David Woodrow "Woody" Radcliff, 77, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Waynesburg, Ohio, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, following an extended illness.

He was born April 5, 1921, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Charles Ward Radcliff and Fannie Morgan Radcliff Weekly.

His wife, DeVona Rinehart Radcliff, whom he married Jan. 15, 1949, survives in Omaha.

Also surviving are three sons and daughter-in-laws, Cliff and Judy, Omaha, Rod and Debi, Woodstock, Ga., and Tom and Julie, Littleton, Colo.; eight grandchildren, David and Maddie, both of Omaha, Megan and Chris Morgan, both of Woodstock, and Ben, Jasmine and Alexandra, both of Littleton; one sister, Belle Frances Radcliff Pollace, Buffalo Lake Road, Lost Creek, and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother in infancy, Thomas Radcliff.

Mr. Radcliff retired from Diebold Inc. of Canton, Ohio, and was a World War II veteran. He was reared on Buffalo Lake Road and was a graduate of Unidis High School Class of 1940. He was a direct descendent of Morgan Morgan.

Interment with full military honors was held in Flowerhill Cemetery, Omaha.

Aris Seckman

ALMA -- Aris Seckman, 92, a resident of Mark Rest Nursing Home, McConnelsville, Ohio, formerly of Tyler County, died Monday, June 15, 1998, in the nursing home.

She was born Oct. 29, 1905, in Little Flint, Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Zebade and Stella Underwood Knight.

Her husband, Leonard B. Seckman, preceded her in death in 1981.

Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Janice Seckman, Baltimore, and Irene Seckman, Georgia; nine grandchildren, including Daniel and Carmen Seckman, Pasadena, Md.; her caregivers; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Morris Seckman and Stanley Seckman; four brothers, Atlee Knight, Paul Knight, Henry Knight and Ancil Knight, and one sister, Lena Elifritz.

Mrs. Seckman was a homemaker and a member of the Fair Oaks Baptist Church, Zanesville, Ohio.

William H. Settles

NUTTER FORT -- Rev. William H. Settles, 75, of Route 1, Lost Creek, Grant Valley Trailer Park, died Tuesday morning, June 16, 1998, at his home following a brief illness.

He was born June 11, 1923, in Perry Mines, a son of the late George and Clara Mason Settles.

His first wife, Louella Settles, preceded him in death on April 30, 1996. His second wife, Lucille Thompson Williams Settles, survives.

Also surviving are two stepsons, Farley Williams, Bridgeport, and Gene Williams, Lost Creek; seven stepdaughters, Yvonne Wheeler, Okeechobee, Fla., Linda Parker, Elyria, Ohio, Diane Porter, Lancaster, Ohio, Betty Clonch and Ruth Smith, both of Lost Creek, Kitty Suter and Barbara Drocolla, both of New Jersey; three sisters, Mabel Hawkins, Goldie Campbell and Eloise Savina, all of Fairmont; three nephews, Richard Settles, George Settles and Bobby Settles, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rev. Settles was a member of United Evangelistic Mission in West Milford and a former pastor of the Grant Valley Baptist Church. He was a retired school bus driver for the Harrison County Board of Education and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Friends will be received from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Greathouse Funeral Home, Nutter Fort. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. William Lanham officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Cemetery.

Ronald R. Castle Sr.

PHILIPPI -- Ronald R. Castle Sr., 47, a resident of Route 1, Philippi, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg.

He was born April 23, 1951, in Oak Hill, a son of Billy and Betty Karnes Castle, Beckley.

His wife, the former Jenne Iaquinta, whom he married March 14, 1975, survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Stephanie Marie Castle and Betty Jane Castle, both at home, and Angie Lee, Laurel, Md.; one son, Ronald R. Castle Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.; four sisters, Gwen Crawford, Victorville, Calif., Vickie Lynn Castle, Beckley, Ella Ruth Castle, Bowie, Md., and Mrs. Lewis (Robin Jean) Taback, Crofton, Md., and two brothers, Michael Lee Castle, Bowie, and Billy Castle, Germantown, Md.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Ralph Castle.

Mr. Castle was a baker and formally owned and operated Ron's Place. He served with the U.S. Army from 1976 to 1979 and was United Methodist.

Francis P. Conway

BUCKHANNON -- Francis P. Conway, 86, of 5 Circle Drive, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at his home.

He was born June 19, 1911, in Southampton, N.Y., a son of the late Julius and Lucy.

His wife, Marjorie E. Enstine Conway, whom he married June 19, 1936, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Cynthia Niool, Hanover, Pa.; one son, Gordon Conway, Buckhannon; two grandsons, Frank Pat and Jared; one granddaughter, Rebecca; four great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Frank Pat Conway.

Mr. Conway was a technical engineer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Buckhannon Rotary Club, Buckhannon Country Club, Amateur Radio Operator, Bull Head Yacht Club of Long Island, and several trade unions.

Max E. Corley

BELINGTON -- Max Edward Corley, 72, of Junior, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for several years but death was unexpected.

He was born June 14, 1926, in Junior, a son of the late Willis E. and Cleo C. Row Corley.

On Aug. 10, 1948, he married the former Jessie Gay Corley, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Howard Peek, Belington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Sandra Corley and David and Sharon Corley, all of Belington; two brothers, Jackson Corley, Belington, and William Corley, Copley, Ohio, and 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Frances Yvonne Scott, and one brother, Marshall Duane Corley.

Mr. Corley was a graduate of Belington High School and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was retired from Bethlehem Corporation's Coal Mine Division with 40 years of service.

He was Methodist, a member of the United Mine Workers of America and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Paul E. Francis

ASHLAND, Ore. -- Paul Edward Francis, 86, of Ashland, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Plum Ridge Care Center, Klamath Falls, Ore.

He was born May 8, 1912, in Titusville, Pa., a son of E. Earl and Pearl Neff Francis.

His wife, Jean Zilhaver Francis, whom he married on Oct. 21, 1939, in Meadville, Pa., survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Anne Smith, Fairfax, Calif., Judith Francis, Gresham, Ore., Rebecca Smith, West Linn, Ore., and Polly Francis, Klamath Falls; one sister, Helen Robertson, Indianapolis, Ind., and six grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Dr. Francis attended the College of Wooster for two years, graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, in 1944, and from McCormick Seminary in Chicago, Ill., in 1947.

During his years in the Seminary he served as pastor of the Ashmore Presbyterian Church and upon ordination in 1947 served Presbyterian Churches in Paris, Ill., from 1947-1953, Clarksburg, from 1953-1960, and Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, Minn., from 1960-1975, concluding his service with a year as interim professor of Homiletics at Dubuque Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1976.

Dr. Francis was active in the national church, including service on the Judicial Commission of the General Assembly and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Davis & Elkins College in 1957.

After retiring to Ashland,in 1976, he preached in many of the Protestant Churches in southern Oregon, moderated Ecumenical Ministries of Ashland and served as interim pastor at the Congregational Church of Ashland, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford, Ore., and First Presbyterian Church of Ashland. An active Rotarian, he also was a member of the Boards of the Rogue Valley Symphony and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Jessica R. Godsey

PHILIPPI -- Jessica Ranae Godsey, 14, of 116 North Main St., Apt. E, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998.

She was born July 20, 1983, at Springfield, Ill., a daughter of Nancy Godsey Mayle, Philippi, and the late Curtis Godsey.

Also surviving are her stepfather, John Mayle; three brothers, Jack, Justin and Joseph Godsey, all of Murrayville, Ill.; two stepbrothers, Robert Lee Mayle, Columbus, Ohio, and John Bryan Miller, Lancaster, Ohio; three stepsisters, Billie Jo Thompson, Canton, Ohio, Tarina Miller, Columbus, and Christina Mayle, Orient, Ohio, and several aunts and uncles.

Miss Godsey was a student at Philip Barbour High School, where she was a member of the choir. She was Baptist.

Robert L. McClung

WESTON -- Robert L. McClung, 70, of 860 Walnut St., died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston, following a brief illness.

He was born June 30, 1927, in Lewis County, a son of the late Charles C. McClung and Mamie L. May McClung.

Surviving are two brothers, Edward McClung, Route 4, Weston, and Charles H. McClung, Glen Dale, Ariz.; three sisters, Clara Jean Stogean, Clarksburg, Brenda Sheilds, Lost Creek, and Nancy Snyder, Buckhannon, and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Ray McClung.

Mr. McClung was retired from Structual Steel in Akron, Ohio, with several years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army and was Protestant.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Clyde Gidley officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Full military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 166, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5131 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 51.

Hazel M. Peters

BUCKHANNON -- Hazel M. Peters, 85, of Arlington, Va., formerly of Randolph Street, died at 11:40 p.m. Monday, June 15, 1998, at Arlington.

She was born Dec. 31, 1912, in Buckhannon Run, a daughter of the late Peter S. Warner and Nancy Wilson Warner.

Her husband, Bayard Peters, whom she married March 10, 1934, preceded her in death on July 13, 1978.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Joann Edmond, Buckhannon, and Hazel Lorene Judy, Petersburg; two sons, Donald G. Peters Sr., Arlington, and William Lee Peters, Manassas, Va.; one sister, Leona Mose, Manassas, and 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Peters and Irene Knicley.

Mrs. Peters was a member of the Buckhannon Union Mission Church and a resident manager of the Ancient Oaks Apartments in Arlington.

Oliver G. Shiflet

Oliver G. Shiflet, 68, of Watkins Lane, Clarksburg, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Bridgeport, a son of the late Oliver Earl and Hazel Mae Hall Shiflet.

His wife, Barbara J. Flowers Shiflet, whom he married July 13, 1950, survives.

Also surviving are six sons, Frank Shiflet, Warren, Ohio, Brad Shiflet and Carl Shiflet, both of Clarksburg, Larry Shiflet, Newark, Ohio, Sherman Shiflet, Sardis, and Timmy Shiflet, Diane, Texas; five daughters, Terry Hardman, Clarksburg, Carol Palacious', Longview, Texas, Susan Lamp, Wilsonburg, Nina Bramer, Sardis, and Mary Strother, Adamston, and 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shiflet was a retired grader operator with the Department of Highways with 18 years of service. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 W. Pike St. Mr. Shiflet will be taken to the Sardis Baptist Church to lie in state one hour prior to the 1 p.m. service on Friday, with the Rev. Gary Layfield officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Cemetery.

Beulah Stackpole

MORGANTOWN -- Beulah "Bute" Burgess Stackpole, 74, of Brookhaven, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at her home.

She was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Reader, a daughter of the late George and Delphia Haught Burgess.

Her husband of 57 years, Ivan Stackpole, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and her husband, Sharon and James Thayer, Morgantown; two sons, Tom Stackpole, Wellsburg, and Gary and his wife, Kathy Stackpole, Shriver; one sister, Phyllis Flynn, Pine Grove, and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Sherlock; seven brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Stackpole was a member of Eight Mile Church of Christ in Reader. She formerly worked at Morgan Shirt Factory of Morgantown, and during the war she worked at Goodyear Aircraft Plant in Akron, Ohio.

Alfred T. Adams

PENNSBORO -- Alfred T. Adams, 72, of Greenwood, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at his residence.

He was born July 7, 1925, at Greenwood in Doddridge County, a son of the late Ira and Pearl Cross Adams.

His wife, Gladys Ruth Ingram Adams, preceded him in death.

Surviving are one son, Donald Adams, Greenwood; four daughters, Diana Jones, Cross Lanes, Deana Jones, Elizabeth, Debbie Pauley, Clarksburg and Dorene Cunningham, West Union; one brother, Ira Adams Jr., Parkersburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Mr. Adams had worked in the timber industry and was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He took part in the invasion of North Africa and at Anzio, Italy and Normandy.

Katharyn Corder

BUCKHANNON -- Katharyn Bailey Corder, 82, of Route 1, Box 111A, Buckhannon, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998, in United Hospital Center.

She was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Kincheloe, a daughter of the late Dell Bailey and Ruth Martin Bailey.

Her husband, Harry Pat Corder, whom she married June 11, 1938, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Edith Ruth Stout, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one son, Charles F. Corder, Cranston, R.I.; two grandsons, John A. Stout Jr. and Douglas Stout, both of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Pamela Stout, Grafton and Tracie Sullivan, Mission Viejo, Calif., two great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters and one great-great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Corder was a homemaker. She attended Union Mission Church, Buckhannon and was a member of Chapter 18 Order of Eastern Star.

William A. Fiske

MORGANTOWN -- William "Bill" Allen Fiske, 51, of Cedarstone Drive, Morgantown, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 22, 1946, in Medway, Maine, a son of Josephine Robertson Fiske, Medway and the late Benjamin Fiske.

His wife, Louise Scribner Fiske, survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Richard Fiske and Douglas Fiske, both of Medway, his faithful companion "Jen" and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Benjamin Fiske, Jr.

Mr. Fiske was Protestant by faith. He received his bachelors degree from Southern Connecticut University in 1969 and his masters degree from Biscayne College in 1981. He worked at West Virginia University in the Department of Athletics, and was also the Associate Women's Basketball Coach from 1981 to 1987. He was a writer for the <fn8>Mountaineer Musket<fn7> from 1983 to 1984.

From 1987 to the present he was academic advisor for student athletes and from 1988 to the present he was a writer for the Blue and Gold News. Also, from 1988 to the present he was a co-host on the Sport Radio Talk Show with the WAJR Radio Station.

Paul D. Furner

BRIDGEPORT -- Paul D. Furner Sr., 88, of 44 Monroe Ave., Clarksburg, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 24, 1909, in Wolf Summit, a son of the late Harvey and Martha Carpenter Furner.

His first wife, Mildred Huff Furner, preceded him in death; his second wife Alberta Singleton Ward Furner, whom he married Sept. 1, 1972, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Charles R. Furner, Wolf Summit, Paul D. Furner Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters, Martha L. Abraham, Reynoldsville and Myrna L. Hyde, Washington; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Maida Brown, Jarvisville and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Richard Furner, two sisters, Dale Haney and Ann Donnellan and one grandchild, Alisa Marie Furner.

Mr. Furner was a member of the Bible Baptist Temple. He retired from the Clinchfield Coal Company, Aug. 26, 1972 and was a member of United Mine Workers Union Local 31.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Bible Baptist Temple, in Stonewood, with the Rev. Charles Madaus and the Rev. Robert Maditz officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Coplin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to People's Hospice of United Hospital Center.

James E. Holtz

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- James Edward "Chummy" Holtz, 57, of Piney Flats, Tenn., formerly of West Union, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, in Albuquerque, N.M.

He was born July 13, 1940, in Doddridge County, a son of Frank and Ada Holtz and the late Nadine Holtz.

His wife, Phillis Baird Holtz, preceded him in death on Sunday, June 14, 1998, in an accident.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jeanna Holtz, Westminster, Calif.; three stepchildren, Lori Buckley, Long Beach, Calif., Stephen Fannon, Bluff City, Tenn., and Jeffrey Fannon, Piney Flats; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Doris) Brigham, San Antonio, Texas, Nelda Jenkins, Amherst, Ohio; one brother, Frank "Snooks" Holtz, Smithburg; four stepbrothers, John Easton, Snohomish, Wash., James Easton, Kenneth Gumm, and Ralph Gumm, all of Parkersburg; four stepsisters, Laura Langford, Clarksburg, Norma Cogar and Delores Knapp, both of Parkersburg, and Barbara Loar, Waynesburg, Pa.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Jack Holtz and one sister, Edrie Lou Moler.

Mr. Holtz graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Kennesaw Trucking Company, White, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the West Union Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Wilmoth officiating.

Laura M. Kuhl

GLENVILLE -- Laura Maxine Kuhl, 73, of Grass Run community in Gilmer County, died at 11:04 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Minnie Hamilton Care Center, Grantsville.

She was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Cleveland Harris and Esta Deuley Harris.

Her husband, Hayward Glen Kuhl, whom she married Nov. 3, 1941, preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice Miller, Letter Gap and Betty Reed, Elyria, Ohio; two sons, Lanny Kuhl, Weston and Ronald "Bud" Kuhl, Glenville; three sisters, Geneva Parson, Normantown, Arlie Weber, Core, and Mary Pycraft, Elyria; two brothers, James Harris, Columbia Station, Ohio and C.J. "June" Harris, Lake Charles, La.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters.

Mrs. Kuhl was a homemaker and a member of the Hardman Fork Baptist Church.

Frances Meredith

SHINNSTON -- M. Frances Meredith, 87, of Van Rufus Drive, Shinnston, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 1998, at the Heritage Nursing Home.

She was born July 8, 1910, at Shinnston, a daughter of the late Ralph and Nellie Poole Shinn.

Her husband, Paul Edward Meredith, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Michael P. Meredith, Lantana, Fla., and one grandson, Nicholas Meredith.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Feaster.

Mrs. Meredith was a member of the First Baptist Church, Shinnston.

Kathryn L. Price

Mrs. Kathryn Lucille Price, 79, 804 Cost Ave., Stonewood, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, in Marietta, Ohio.

She was born March 23, 1919, in Morgan County, a daughter of the late Elmer Crawford and the late Fannie Jane Shaffer Crawford.

Her first husband, Roy David Martin, preceded her in death and also her second husband, William A. Price.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, David Roy and Brenda J. Martin, Marietta, Ohio; stepchildren, Carolyn Price, Clarksburg, Bernard and wife Elsie Price, Greenville, S.C. and Hayward and wife Susan McCauley, Kansas; one brother, Kenneth Crawford, San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Dorothy Saunders, Berkeley Springs, nine stepgrandchildren, Kayla, Ciara and Dan Sutton, Ryan and Alicia Price, William Andrew, Melisa and Jennifer McCauley and Norman Price and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Widmyer and Ethel Kidwell.

Mrs. Price was a member of the Stonewall United Methodist Church and she had served as treasurer of the Womens' Society of her church for ten years. She had previously been employed by the former Burl Thorp Cleaners and later by Ra Mar Florist.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Augustus Manu and the Rev. Gene Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Stonewall Park Cemetery.

Harvey G. Shields

WEST UNION -- Harvey Gail Shields, 89, a resident of Salem Americare Nursing Facility died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 1998, at the facility following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1908, at Shirley, in Tyler County a son of the late George Roscoe and Cora Icy Farley Shields.

His wife, Ruby Ruth Main Shields, whom he married Feb. 18, 1928, preceded him in death on July 14, 1940.

Surviving are three sons, Wilford Gail Shields and Herman Leon Shields both of West Union, and Joe Lee Shields, Parkersburg; two daughters, Mildred Marie Costilow, West Union and Garnet Louise Shahan, Salem; one brother, Elisha Willard Shields, Greenwood; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Ernest (Bill) Shields, Elijah Shields, Robert Shields, Walker Shields and Valentine Shields both who died in infancy; three sisters Melvina Shields who died in infancy and Susan Haught and Zelma Finley and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Shields had formerly been employed as a rural mail carrier in the late 1920s with over 30 years of combined service in Doddridge and Wetzel counties and was a Protestant.

Mary Rogucki

SHINNSTON -- Mary Rogucki, 78, of Worthington, died at 1:05 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born Aug. 1, 1919, at McWhorter, a daughter of the late Carl and Mary Rus Sega.

Her husband of 63 years, Stanley Rogucki, whom she married Aug. 18, 1936, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Stanley Rogucki Jr., Northfield, Ohio, John C. Rogucki, Northfield Center, Ohio, and Frank Rogucki, Glenville; one daughter, Teresa S. Schultz, Spring Hill, Fla.; two brothers, Tony Sega, Rosemont and John Sega, Awada, Colo.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ann Lawson.

Mrs. Rogucki was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Monongah.

Friends will be received from 1-9 p.m. today at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston. A Wake Service will be held at the funeral home at 5 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Spirit Parish Church, Monongah, with the Rev. James J. Neville officiating. Interment will be held in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rosemont.

James Wheeler Jr.

James A. "Jack" Wheeler Jr., 81, of 177 Park Boulevard, Clarksburg, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, in United Hospital Center.

He was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Philippi, a son of the late James Arden Wheeler and Florence Huffer Wheeler.

Twice married, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Monie Bolyard Wheeler and by his second wife, Charlotte Brown Wheeler.

Surviving are four children and spouses, Mary Lue and Rudy Poole, Vienna, Franklin D. and Shirley Wheeler, Route 2, Lost Creek, Betty Jean Pursley and James Ronald and Ginger Wheeler, all of Route 1, Mount Clare; two stepchildren, Linda Leeper, Canton, Ohio, and Richard Brown, Morgantown; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one-great-great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Wheeler was a farmer and coal miner, having worked for Joyce Mining Corporation. He had been a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gordon Shoemaker officiating. Interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery, Lost Creek.
